British bed maker Sleepeezee reported a 49.8% reduction in absolute carbon emissions from its Rochester factory since 2018. The company achieved this while revenue grew from 28 million to over 46 million pounds, meaning carbon intensity per million pounds of turnover dropped by 68.44%. The factory has sent zero waste to landfill since 2012 and cut general waste by another 7.5% last year through better segregation. The company also reduced gas and electricity use per million pounds of turnover by 9% and 4% respectively compared to the prior year. Mattress springs now contain 25% recycled material on average, and comfort layers use recycled plastic. A take-back scheme for hospitality sector mattresses recycles 50% to 93% of each returned unit, with the remainder converted to energy. Sleepeezee is pursuing Planet Mark certification for the eighth consecutive year and expanding biodiversity areas at its site.

Agreed. The 9% gas and 4% electricity reductions per turnover are decent but not huge. The headline 49.8% absolute cut might be partly from shifting to less carbon intensive inputs or process changes.

The recycling range likely depends on mattress construction. Hospitality mattresses are simpler to strip. The energy conversion for the remainder is better than landfill but not ideal. Planet Mark certification is a voluntary standard, not a regulatory one.
