British bed maker Sleepeezee reduced absolute carbon emissions from its Rochester factory by 49.8 percent since 2018, according to a June 2026 announcement timed with World Environment Day. The company's carbon intensity dropped 68.44 percent over the same period because revenue grew more than 60 percent, from 28 million pounds to over 46 million pounds. Sleepeezee also sends zero waste to landfill, cut general waste by 7.51 percent last year, and reduced gas and electricity use per million pounds of turnover by 9 percent and 4 percent respectively. Sleepeezee's mattress springs now contain 25 percent recycled material on average, and comfort layers use recycled plastic. A take-back scheme recycles between 50 and 93 percent of returned mattresses, with the remainder converted to energy. The company is also expanding biodiversity areas at its Rochester site and pursuing Planet Mark certification for the eighth consecutive year. The factory's progress shows that manufacturing growth and emissions cuts can happen together, though the company continues targeting year-on-year reductions.

The zero waste to landfill since 2012 is impressive for a factory. Most industrial sites still struggle with that. The mattress recycling numbers are decent but 50% on the low end suggests some products are harder to break down. Wonder what the mix is.

Worth noting this is a single factory in Rochester, not a whole supply chain. Scope 1 and 2 only presumably. Still better than nothing but the real test is whether they can keep cutting as gas and electricity get cheaper per unit. The 4% electricity intensity improvement is modest.

The 5% annual reduction target is pretty standard. Beating it by this much early on is common when you pick the low hanging fruit. The interesting part will be the next 5 years when the easy efficiency gains are gone. Also no mention of offsets or RECs which is refreshing.

The bug hotel and wildflower area is nice PR but the real work is in the factory floor changes. Would like to know if they switched to heat pumps for process heat or just better insulation and LED lighting. The gas reduction suggests some heating or drying process improvements.
