SkyKraft, a joint venture between SkyNRG and Skellefteå Kraft, has secured 21 million euros from the Swedish Energy Agency. The funding supports engineering and feasibility studies for a proposed electro sustainable aviation fuel facility in Skellefteå, Sweden. The plant aims to produce 130,000 tons of eSAF annually using renewable electricity and biogenic CO2. A final investment decision is expected by 2027 as the project works to meet tightening EU aviation decarbonization mandates.

The site has access to renewable power, but 130k tons of eSAF requires a massive amount of electricity. I wonder what the actual peak load on the local grid will be and if the current infrastructure can handle it without upgrades.

The mention of biogenic CO2 is the key part. If they can source that cheaply from local industrial waste, the margins improve. Otherwise, the cost of carbon capture will eat the budget.

The ReFuelEU mandates are the real driver here. Without those regulatory requirements, the economics of eSAF are usually too poor to attract this kind of capital. It is a classic case of policy creating the market.
