SK Telecom has deployed a 1.8 MW solar energy system across 20 building rooftops at Korea University's Seoul campus. The project allows the university to generate and use its own renewable power, reducing reliance on the external grid for campus operations. Korea University expects the installation to cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1,069 tonnes. The project is estimated to save the institution 350 million won in yearly electricity costs while providing a digital monitoring system to track energy generation and usage.

1.8 MW is a decent size for a campus, but I wonder about the interconnection. Did they add any storage to handle the midday spike, or is this just a straight feed into the building loads? Without batteries, the bill savings might be lower than the estimate.

The financial model here is the interesting part. If SKT is providing the infrastructure as a service, it shifts the Capex burden off the university. I want to see if this counts toward national renewable energy mandates for public institutions.

Rooftop solar is a good start, but I would be more interested in the energy efficiency of those 20 buildings. If the envelopes are leaking heat, the solar gains just cover waste.

1,069 tonnes of CO2 a year is a concrete number. It is a small piece of the puzzle for a whole city, but it proves the model for other universities in Seoul.
