SK Nexilis Develops Carbon-Coated Copper Foil for Silicon Anode Batteries, Targets 2027 Commercialization
finance.biggo.comSK Nexilis, a South Korean copper foil maker, has developed a carbon-coated copper foil designed to keep silicon anode materials from peeling off during charging and discharging. The company says the coating improves adhesion, which helps battery lifespan and safety, and it can also work with dry electrode manufacturing. Commercialization is targeted for the second half of 2027. Silicon anodes offer higher energy density than graphite but expand significantly when charged, which causes cracking and delamination. Copper foil surface treatment is one way to manage that without replacing the anode chemistry. SK Nexilis is now building a pilot production line and verifying process stability, with customer certification still ahead. Battery makers are increasingly mixing more silicon into anodes, so materials suppliers that solve the adhesion problem early could gain supply chain leverage. The dry electrode process, which cuts energy use by avoiding solvent drying, is also a key market, though it faces technical hurdles before wide adoption.
