SK Nexilis Develops Carbon-Coated Copper Foil for Silicon Anode Batteries and Dry Electrode Process
businesskorea.co.krSK Nexilis, an SKC subsidiary, has developed a high-adhesion carbon-coated copper foil designed to address silicon anode swelling and delamination in lithium-ion batteries. Silicon anodes offer higher energy density than graphite, but they expand during charging and discharging, which can cause active material to peel away from the current collector. The new coating strengthens the bond between the copper foil and anode material, which improves electrode stability, battery life, and safety. The company also says the foil works with the dry electrode process, a manufacturing method that avoids liquid slurry and can reduce both production costs and energy use. SK Nexilis has started building a pilot line and is verifying process stability, with commercialization targeted for the second half of 2027. If the technology scales, it could help lower the cost of higher-energy-density cells and make battery production more efficient.
