SK Nexilis develops carbon-coated copper foil for silicon anode batteries, targeting 2027 commercialization
biz.chosun.comSK Nexilis, the copper foil unit of South Korea's SKC, has developed a carbon-coated copper foil designed to keep silicon anode materials attached to the current collector. Silicon anodes can expand during charging, which tends to peel the electrode away from the foil and shorten battery life. The company says the coating improves adhesion, supports structural stability, and can be used in dry electrode manufacturing, a process that cuts energy and solvent use in battery production. SK Nexilis plans to build a pilot line to verify process stability and target commercialization in the second half of 2027. The development responds to the industry shift toward higher silicon content in anodes, where adhesion becomes more critical. For battery makers, the question is whether the coated foil adds cost or resistance at scale, and whether it helps dry electrode processes become production-ready.
