Six Japanese shipping and shipbuilding companies, including MOL, K LINE, and NYK Line, obtained Approval in Principle from ClassNK for a low-pressure 42,000 cubic meter liquefied CO2 carrier design. The AiP follows a HAZID risk assessment and is the first concrete result of the MILES framework for standardizing LCO2 carriers. The standardized design aims to support Japan's growing CCS pipeline by making domestic construction more efficient and lowering the cost of moving captured CO2 to storage sites. MOL already has two LCO2 carriers under long-term charter for the Northern Lights project in Norway, with CO2 transport services expected to begin around 2028. This matters for anyone following CCS infrastructure because vessel standardization is one of the missing pieces in building a working CO2 transport chain. A common design platform could cut design workload, speed up construction, and make CCS economics more predictable.
