Six EU member states, including Poland and the Czech Republic, are calling for an increase in free carbon allowances under the Emissions Trading System. These countries argue that energy intensive industries in central and southern Europe need more financial relief before 2030 to survive high energy costs while transitioning to lower emissions. The group is specifically challenging revised sector benchmarks. They warn that while some allowances may increase, deep cuts to heat and fuel sector permits could drive up operational costs and threaten industrial competitiveness across the bloc.
