Singapore's first gas power plant with battery storage breaks ground on Jurong Island
straitstimes.comPacificLight Power has started construction on a 670 MW combined cycle gas turbine plant on Jurong Island, Singapore's first gas plant to include an 80 MW battery storage system. The $1.2 billion facility, due online in 2029, will be the largest single-unit CCGT in the country and boost PacificLight's capacity by 70%. The battery is designed to respond within two seconds, supporting grid stability as solar deployment grows. The plant is hydrogen-ready, able to burn a 30% hydrogen blend initially, with plans to reach 100% hydrogen as costs and infrastructure improve. Singapore's peak electricity demand is forecast to grow 2.4% to 6.5% annually over the next decade, driven by AI, advanced manufacturing, and electrification. The project also aligns with the government's creation of a new Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry in October.
