Singapore calls 6 GW low-carbon electricity import target aspirational as projects stall
businesstimes.com.sgSingapore's Energy Market Authority says the country's 6 GW low-carbon electricity import target for 2035 is aspirational, not guaranteed. EMA pointed to source and transit country approvals and commercial demand as deciding factors. The admission follows a Wood Mackenzie report that imports may only reach half the target, or about 15 percent of Singapore's power mix by 2035. Singapore currently gets about 95 percent of its electricity from natural gas. EMA has granted conditional approvals for 9.25 GW of imports from Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Australia, but Wood Mackenzie says none of those projects have started construction. Malaysia projects look most likely to deliver by 2035, while Indonesian projects face export permit renewals every five years and quota revocation risk. EMA says imports remain central to decarbonizing the power sector and diversifying supply. It is also working on solar, biomethane, ammonia, geothermal and advanced nuclear as complementary options.
