Silkworm Protein: A Carbon-Negative Alternative to Fishmeal and Soymeal

Loopworm is scaling silkworm-based feed ingredients to replace traditional fishmeal and soymeal. An independent life cycle assessment indicates the process is net carbon negative, removing 2.56 kg of CO2 equivalent for every 1 kg of ingredient produced. Beyond carbon removal, the silkworm protein shows improved growth rates and lower mortality in shrimp trials compared to fishmeal. The company focuses on salmon, shrimp, and pet food markets to reduce reliance on deforestation-linked soy and climate-vulnerable marine sources.
