Sicona Battery Technologies has secured a $45 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to build its first commercial-scale silicon-carbon anode facility in Wollongong, Australia. The plant will produce up to 230 tonnes per year of SiCx anode material, which is designed to work with existing lithium-ion battery production lines. Sicona says the material boosts energy density by over 20% and enables charging more than 40% faster than conventional graphite anodes. The facility will be located within BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla precinct, and the project is part of Australia's Battery Breakthrough Initiative aimed at building sovereign battery materials manufacturing capability. The grant marks a shift from development to commercial scale for Sicona. The company is also planning a larger 6,500 tonne per annum facility that could later expand to 26,500 tonnes. Beyond EVs, Sicona is targeting AI data centers, power tools, defense, and robotics as growth markets. The Wollongong plant is expected to create 36 skilled manufacturing jobs and follows a May 2025 licensing partnership with India's Himadri. The project is a concrete example of government funding supporting low-carbon supply chain development outside of China.
