Sicona silicon-carbon anode funding milestone: Port Kembla facility and US expansion plans explained
discoveryalert.com.auSicona Battery Technologies secured up to AUD 45 million from ARENA in July 2026 to build a commercial-scale silicon-carbon anode facility at Port Kembla, New South Wales. The company's SiCx material offers up to 20% higher energy density and 40% faster charging than conventional graphite anodes, with drop-in compatibility for existing battery production lines. This funding round, combined with earlier equity from Himadri Speciality Chemical, positions Sicona to move from qualification samples to full commercial supply. The Port Kembla site will start at 230 tonnes per year for customer qualification, then scale to 6,500 tonnes and eventually 26,500 tonnes annually. Sicona also plans a US facility in the Southeast, targeting IRA compliance and access to the American EV market. The key risk is the 12 to 36 month qualification window with tier-1 battery makers before Phase 2 capital deployment. If Sicona converts those relationships into binding offtake, it could become a major Western anode supplier.
