The plant will be located at BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla precinct in New South Wales. Sicona's SiCx material is designed to boost lithium-ion battery energy density by up to 20% and enable 40% faster charging compared to standard graphite anodes, while working with existing battery manufacturing lines. The funding comes from ARENA's Battery Breakthrough Initiative and supports Sicona's plan to produce qualification samples for EV makers and battery manufacturers. Himadri Speciality Chemical, which already invested in Sicona, is backing the scale-up. If the demonstration plant validates the process at commercial scale, it could lead to offtake deals and larger production runs. Agreed. No timeline in the article. Also, BlueScope Steel site is interesting. Co-location with an industrial facility could mean cheaper energy or shared infrastructure. But it could also mean permitting delays. Would like to see a construction start date.
