Sicona gets AUD 45 million from ARENA for silicon-carbon battery anode plant in Australia

Sicona Battery Technologies, backed by Himadri Speciality Chemical, has secured up to AUD 45 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to build a commercial-scale demonstration facility for silicon-carbon anode materials. The plant will be located at BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla precinct in New South Wales. The funding comes from ARENA's Battery Breakthrough Initiative and is aimed at commercializing Sicona's SiCx silicon-carbon anode material for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage. According to ARENA, Sicona's silicon-carbon anode material can boost lithium-ion battery energy density by up to 20 percent and enable charging speeds up to 40 percent faster than conventional graphite anodes. The material is designed to work with existing battery manufacturing lines, which reduces the need for retooling. The demonstration facility will produce qualification samples for battery makers and EV OEMs, with the goal of securing offtake agreements and scaling up production. This funding is part of ARENA's Battery Breakthrough Initiative, which aims to strengthen domestic battery supply chains in Australia. Himadri Speciality Chemical, which backs Sicona, sees this as a step toward building a global position in advanced battery materials. Silicon-carbon anodes are widely seen as a key improvement for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, offering higher energy density and faster charging without major changes to existing production lines.
