Sicona Battery Technologies has secured AU$45 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to build a production facility for silicon-carbon anodes in Wollongong, New South Wales. The plant will start with an annual capacity of 230 tonnes, targeting higher energy density for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and grid storage. Silicon-carbon anodes are seen as a step beyond standard graphite anodes because they can store more lithium ions, which translates to longer range or higher storage capacity per cell. The funding comes from ARENA's Advancing Renewables Program, which supports early-stage manufacturing that could lower the cost of clean energy technologies. If Sicona hits its targets, the facility could help reduce Australia's reliance on imported anode materials and strengthen the domestic battery supply chain. The project also adds industrial jobs in Wollongong, a city with a history in heavy manufacturing that is pivoting toward clean energy production.
