Sicona Battery Technologies secured $45 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to build a commercial-scale silicon-carbon battery anode material facility in Wollongong, within BlueScope Steel's Port Kembla precinct. The plant will produce up to 230 tonnes per year of SiCx material, which boosts lithium-ion battery energy density by over 20% and enables 40% faster charging compared to conventional graphite. The facility is expected to create 36 skilled manufacturing jobs and support Australia's domestic battery supply chain. The grant comes under the Australian Government's Battery Breakthrough Initiative and follows a licensing partnership with Himadri in India. Sicona's technology is designed to be compatible with existing battery production lines, targeting electric vehicles, AI data centers, power tools, and defense applications. The company also plans a larger 6,500 tonne per annum facility with potential expansion to 26,500 tonnes. This project shows Australia moving beyond raw mineral exports into advanced materials manufacturing for the energy transition.
