Sicona Battery Technologies has secured a $45 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to build its first commercial-scale silicon-carbon battery anode material production facility in Wollongong, New South Wales. The facility will produce up to 230 tonnes per year of Sicona's SiCx material, which is designed to boost lithium-ion battery energy density by over 20% and enable charging speeds more than 40% faster than conventional graphite. The grant is part of Australia's Battery Breakthrough Initiative, aimed at building domestic battery manufacturing capability. The project includes an exclusivity agreement with BlueScope Steel to assess development within BlueScope's Port Kembla precinct. Sicona says its technology is compatible with existing lithium-ion battery production lines, which could speed up customer qualification and offtake agreements. The company is also planning a larger 6,500-tonne-per-year commercial facility, with potential expansion to 26,500 tonnes per year. The Wollongong facility is expected to create up to 36 skilled manufacturing jobs. This funding follows Sicona's May 2025 licensing and strategic partnership with Himadri in India, which included a AU$17.5 million follow-on investment.
