Sicona calls for faster Australian funding for Port Kembla silicon-carbon anode plant
ecommercenews.com.auAustralia produces 45% of the world's lithium but less than 1% of its battery materials, and Sicona Battery Technologies wants faster public funding to close that gap. The company is building a silicon-carbon anode plant at BlueScope's Port Kembla precinct with AUD 45 million from ARENA's Battery Breakthrough Initiative, but it needs another AUD 55 million in equity to finish construction. Sicona points to UK support for Nexeon and a conditional US loan for Sila Nanotechnologies as examples of overseas governments moving faster on battery materials manufacturing. The Port Kembla project would lift production to 230 tonnes a year and create up to 72 jobs. With ARENA's program closed to new applications, Sicona says the National Reconstruction Fund needs to take a bigger role in construction finance. The company also acquired US-based Advano, bringing its patent portfolio to 151 patents across 46 families. The article is useful for anyone tracking Australia's attempt to move from raw material exporter to battery supply chain participant.
