UK law firm Shoosmiths has signed a five year forward offtake agreement with Carbonaires to buy biochar carbon removal credits from HUSK, a women led producer operating in Cambodia and Vietnam. The deal locks in long term supply and price for high integrity removals as demand in the voluntary carbon market grows. HUSK turns rice husks into biochar that stores carbon for over 1,000 years and has already regenerated more than 6,400 hectares of farmland. Shoosmiths says the biochar credits, combined with a 70% reduction in its operational emissions, will bring its net operational emissions to zero. The firm is not yet claiming net zero because it has not hit the 90% reduction threshold, but it is buying removals now for residual emissions. The credits are certified under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard. Carbonaires sourced the project, did due diligence, and will manage retirements.
