Shipboard carbon capture trial passes EU ETS and IMO milestones for maritime decarbonization
tradewindsnews.comA maritime carbon capture pilot called Project CAPTURED has achieved regulatory milestones that give captured CO2 direct compliance value under the EU Emissions Trading System. The project captured CO2 on board the container ship Ever Top, transferred it to a tanker, and transported it 2,200 km overland for carbon mineralization. The EU ETS now allows verified captured volumes to be deducted from emissions requiring allowance surrender, provided the CO2 is permanently bound in approved products. The same pilot data received in-principle support from the IMO for recognizing carbon mineralization as permanent CO2 storage, broadening disposal options beyond geological sequestration. The project maintained CO2 purity above 99.95% and achieved a 7.9% net greenhouse gas reduction at a 10.7% gross capture rate. The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation said an optimized value chain could lift savings to 17.8%. These regulatory steps move onboard carbon capture from demonstration toward commercial viability by linking compliance recognition, commercial value, and measurable emissions reductions. The milestones could support new maritime carbon logistics chains and provide a reference case for shipping companies evaluating carbon capture technology.
