Sheraton Lagos Hotel has installed a new gas-powered generator to replace diesel units, aiming to cut carbon emissions and lower operating costs. The hotel's general manager said early testing shows a significant drop in running costs, with an 18-month return on investment expected. The switch reduces noise, soot, and air pollution for guests and the surrounding Ikeja community. The hotel, owned by Ikeja Hotels PLC, has been named Nigeria's best hotel for sustainability for three consecutive years. Management tied the move to its Green Key sustainability initiatives and 2030 environmental targets. Natural gas burns more efficiently than diesel, resulting in lower CO2 emissions per unit of power generated. While gas is still a fossil fuel, the shift from diesel to gas represents a meaningful emissions reduction in a market with unreliable grid power. The hotel purchased the generator outright rather than renting, indicating a long-term commitment to this cleaner energy source.
