Shell has unveiled a working EV concept called the Triple 10 Challenge, aiming to prove that fast charging and high efficiency can coexist. The compact hatchback uses a 32-kWh battery and targets 10 km of range per kWh, a lifetime carbon footprint of 10 tonnes of CO2, and a 10 to 80 percent charge in under 10 minutes. The key innovation is a natural gas-based, non-conductive liquid that directly cools battery cells, motor, and power electronics through a single radiator, reducing the need for complex cooling loops and cutting battery pack costs by 25 percent. The concept achieved a 0 to 80 percent charge in 9 minutes and 54 seconds on a standard 175 kW charger, maintaining consistent cell temperatures throughout. Shell partnered with Empel Systems for the motor and RML for battery integration to make the vehicle road-legal. While still a concept, the thermal management approach could influence future EV designs by lowering cost and improving charge speed without requiring larger batteries.
