Shell completes 18-month upgrade at Aarhus biogas plant boosting biomethane output to 20 million cubic metres per year

Shell has finished an 18-month upgrade of its Aarhus biogas facility in Denmark. The plant can now process 700,000 tonnes of waste annually and produce around 20 million cubic metres of biomethane per year. The upgraded facility feeds biomethane directly into the Danish gas grid and includes storage to maintain supply when renewable output is low. Shell Low Carbon Solutions says the project supplies low-carbon gas for hard-to-electrify sectors and returns nutrients to agriculture, reducing demand for synthetic fertiliser. The Aarhus site dates back to the 1990s and has been modernised to handle higher volumes of waste from agriculture, households, and the food sector. Denmark remains one of Europe's most active biogas markets. The European Biogas Association reports that Europe's biomethane sector added over 1 billion cubic metres of new annual production capacity in the past year, pushing total capacity past 8 billion cubic metres for the first time, a 17% rise on 2025 levels.
