Shell Aarhus biogas facility upgrade boosts biomethane output to 20 million cubic metres per year

Shell completed an 18-month upgrade at its Aarhus biogas facility in Denmark, raising capacity to process 700,000 tonnes of waste annually. The facility now produces about 20 million cubic metres of biomethane per year, which can be sent directly into the Danish gas grid. Storage capability ensures a steady supply when renewable energy generation is low. The upgrade also recycles nutrients back into agriculture, reducing the need for artificial fertilisers. Shell says the project provides low-carbon molecules for sectors that are hard to electrify, using existing gas infrastructure to deliver near-term emission reductions. Denmark remains one of Europe's most active biogas markets, with other facilities in the country also advancing biogenic carbon capture and biomethane production.
