Sheffield venues extend E.ON district heating deal for low-carbon heat
news.eonenergy.comThree Sheffield venues, Ice Sheffield, English Institute of Sport Sheffield and Utilita Arena Sheffield, have renewed their multi-year agreement with E.ON to take low-carbon heat from the Blackburn Meadows district heating network. The venues use around 4,400 MWh of heat each year, roughly the same as more than 460 homes, for ice rinks, training facilities and live events. The network runs eight kilometres across the Lower Don Valley and currently supplies nine buildings. E.ON says the heat from Blackburn Meadows has a carbon footprint less than 10% of natural gas. The renewals give the venues a predictable heat source and give E.ON a stable base to keep the network running. District heating of this kind is a practical way to cut emissions from large buildings without waiting for individual boiler replacements. Anyone tracking low-carbon heat in UK cities should watch whether more buildings connect to this network. The infrastructure already exists, and longer contracts like this improve the business case for expanding it further.
