Shearwater GeoServices to survey carbon storage potential in Australia's Bonaparte Basin
offshore-energy.bizNorwegian firm Shearwater GeoServices has secured a contract to conduct a 3D seismic survey in the Bonaparte Basin offshore Australia. The survey aims to assess the basin's carbon storage potential as part of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. Shearwater will deploy its SW Bly vessel for about 50 days starting in the third quarter of 2026. The geophysical data collected will help identify future injection well locations and serve as a baseline for potential 4D seismic monitoring. This is Shearwater's second CCS-related survey in the Bonaparte Basin, following a similar campaign in 2024. The company says CCS will play an important role in the energy transition and that these surveys are a natural extension of its business. The project highlights growing interest in offshore carbon storage as a tool for reducing emissions. Shearwater's CEO noted that the company has established a strong position in supporting carbon storage projects globally. The survey will provide critical data for appraising the site's suitability for long-term CO2 storage.
