Sharp Indonesia turned a running event into a reforestation effort, planting 600 Rasamala trees at the Pusat Suaka Satwa Elang Jawa in Gunung Halimun Salak National Park. The campaign, called Sharp Run for the Future, aims to restore about 2.4 hectares of forest and support the endangered Javan hawk-eagle. The trees are expected to absorb up to 180 tons of CO2 equivalent and produce 60-72 tons of oxygen per year when fully grown. The project was carried out with Hutan Itu Indonesia and Postinc, blending a sports activation with direct conservation. Sharp says the effort is part of its ESG strategy and wants to push sustainability as a business approach, not just CSR. The planting site also serves as a rehabilitation center for the Javan hawk-eagle, an endemic species that signals forest health.

600 trees on 2.4 hectares is a start but that density is low. Rasamala is a good choice for restoration though, native and durable. Would like to see survival rate data after a year.

Agreed. 180 tons CO2 over a full growth cycle is modest but not nothing. The real value here is habitat restoration for the hawk-eagle. Carbon is a side benefit.

Worth noting that 2.4 hectares is a small patch. But for a corporate activation it beats planting trees that die in a month. Rasamala is a solid choice for that elevation.

Sharp framing this as ESG strategy rather than CSR is interesting. If they actually integrate it into operations beyond one campaign, that would be meaningful. Otherwise it stays a PR event.

The carbon numbers are rough estimates. 180 tons CO2e for 600 trees sounds like a generic assumption per tree. Would be better if they cited a verified methodology or third party check.
