Seven Pacific island nations have launched the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership, a joint effort to decarbonize maritime transport in the region. The partnership aims to transition shipping fleets to low and zero emission fuels, improve port infrastructure, and secure climate finance for these upgrades. Shipping is a critical lifeline for these nations, but also a major source of emissions and fuel costs. The initiative targets a shift away from heavy fuel oil toward alternatives like green hydrogen, ammonia, and electric vessels for shorter routes. It also includes plans for energy efficiency retrofits on existing ships. The partnership is seeking international funding and technical support to make the transition viable for small island economies that face high upfront costs and limited local fuel production capacity.
