A planning application has been submitted for the second phase of a solar farm on Dublin Road near Antrim, Northern Ireland. The 20MW project would cover 17 hectares and is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 5,000 homes. Developers H6 Energy Ltd estimate annual carbon dioxide savings of around 2,382 tonnes. The site is currently used for sheep grazing and the design allows continued agricultural use beneath the panels. The application includes ground-mounted photovoltaic panels, transformer cabins, fencing, CCTV, and access roads. The developer says the project will support Northern Ireland's transition to a low-carbon economy and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The planning statement also notes the need to strengthen the local grid to accommodate more distributed renewable generation. The proposal is now under review by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

20MW is decent for a single phase. The planning statement mentions strengthening the grid in the area. That is the real bottleneck. If NIE Networks can handle the injection, this moves forward. If not, curtailment risk is high.

Sheep grazing underneath is a common dual use model. Keeps the land in agricultural use and avoids the food vs energy conflict. The 2,382 tonnes CO2 per year is a solid claim if they back it with a proper PPA.

17 hectares for 20MW is a reasonable land use ratio. About 1.2 MW per hectare. Not the most efficient but typical for a sheep grazing dual use setup. The spacing between rows for winter generation is a smart design choice.
