Sebi Bars EKI Energy and MD Over Carbon Credit Firm's Financial Misreporting
economictimes.indiatimes.comIndia's markets regulator, Sebi, has barred EKI Energy Services and its managing director, Manish Kumar Dabkara, from the securities market for two months and 12 months respectively. The order follows an investigation into the carbon credits trading firm's financial statements. Sebi found that EKI prematurely booked revenue of Rs 197.04 crore during the first three quarters of FY23, which misled investors about the company's performance. Sebi also said EKI overstated expenses by Rs 26.34 crore across FY22 and FY23, calling the payments for services not rendered a diversion of company funds. Penalties totaling Rs 88 lakh were imposed on the company, Dabkara, former CFO Mohit Kumar Agarwal, directors Naveen Sharma and Sonali Sheikh, and others. Dabkara has been told to recover the diverted amount. The case is a reminder that carbon credit companies are not exempt from basic financial discipline. When revenue recognition and expense claims are shaky, the integrity of the carbon market itself takes a hit. Buyers and investors should watch how offset project developers account for income and where the money actually goes.
