SeAH Steel has secured a contract to supply about 1,750 metric tons of stainless steel pipes for a carbon capture project in Teesside, northern England. The project is part of the UK's East Coast Cluster, one of the country's first large-scale CCUS initiatives. The pipes will be used in a gas-fired power plant to process and transport captured carbon dioxide for deep-sea storage. The company says its large-diameter pipes (50 to 66 inches) are produced in 12-meter lengths, twice the standard, which reduces the number of welds needed on site. The pipes are designed to resist brittle fracturing at temperatures as low as minus 196 degrees Celsius and corrosion under deep-sea pressure. The UK government has committed more than 21 billion pounds over 25 years to develop its first CCUS clusters. SeAH Steel plans to use this contract as a foothold for additional supply agreements in global CCUS projects.
