Liverpool Bay CCS, part of the Eni group, has signed a seabed lease with The Crown Estate for a carbon storage project off the Flintshire coast. The project will reuse the Point of Ayr gas terminal at Talacre, along with over 75 miles of existing pipeline and three offshore structures, to store carbon dioxide from industrial sources in north Wales and north west England. First injection is expected in 2028, with an initial capacity of 4.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year. The project targets emissions from cement works, energy from waste plants, and low carbon hydrogen production. It claims to support around 2,000 construction jobs. The pipeline route from Cheshire to Flintshire was approved in March 2024, and onshore planning was approved by Flintshire County Council in January 2024. Reusing existing infrastructure could shorten timelines compared to building from scratch, but the 2028 target still faces regulatory and technical hurdles.
