Recent research from the University of Padova highlights the role of sea lavender in capturing and storing atmospheric carbon within salt marsh soils. These plants use horizontal rhizome root systems to secure carbon and protect coastlines from erosion. Preserving salt marshes is critical for climate strategy, as these ecosystems act as natural carbon sinks. However, significant portions of these habitats have been lost to coastal development, reducing the planet's natural capacity for carbon removal.
