Scottish Water reaches 100 solar installations, generating 25 GWh of clean power annually
theenergyst.comScottish Water has marked a major renewable energy milestone with the installation of its 100th solar scheme, located at Kinneil Kerse Wastewater Treatment Works near Falkirk. The utility now operates solar panels at 100 sites across Scotland, generating around 25.1 GWh of green electricity each year, equivalent to powering roughly 9,300 UK homes. The projects are part of Scottish Water's push to reach net zero emissions by 2040, five years ahead of the national target. Beyond cutting carbon and reducing operational costs, the solar programme includes biodiversity enhancements such as wildflower meadows, bird boxes, and hibernacula for amphibians and reptiles. Scottish Water Horizons, the commercial subsidiary, leads the effort, partnering to identify sites where renewable generation offers the greatest benefit. Cabinet Secretary Gillian Martin welcomed the milestone, noting how underused spaces can support both climate action and nature recovery.
