Scottish Water becomes first utility to adopt Envetec technology for lab plastic recycling and carbon reduction
watermagazine.co.ukScottish Water has become the first utility in the world to deploy Envetec's GENERATIONS technology, which disinfects and shreds contaminated laboratory plastics on site, enabling them to be recycled for the first time. The utility processes about 72,000 sample bottles since January and is expanding to microbiological waste that previously required autoclaving before landfill or incineration. The new process cuts water use, energy demand, and carbon emissions while reducing manual handling and improving traceability of waste streams. By handling three million analytical tests per year, Scottish Water generates large volumes of single-use plastics like pipette tips and petri dishes. This technology supports a more circular approach, aligns with net zero goals, and provides data on waste volumes and emissions savings. The move demonstrates how utilities can reduce environmental impact without compromising regulatory compliance or public health standards.
