Scottish Fire and Rescue HQ installs 524 solar panels, cuts grid electricity by a third
firescotland.gov.ukThe Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has installed 524 photovoltaic panels on unused land at its national headquarters in Cambuslang. The system, completed in April 2026, is expected to pay back its 450,000 investment in about eight years and will keep producing power for 25 years. It also exports clean electricity back to the grid when generation exceeds on-site demand. Grid electricity use at the site has already dropped by more than a third compared with the previous year, and the panels are expected to cut emissions by more than 70 tonnes annually. The project is part of Scotland's Climate Week 2026 and supports the service's carbon management plan. For other public sector bodies with spare land, this offers a straightforward example of a solar project with clear cost and carbon numbers.
