ScotRail net zero plan: new trains, electrification, and solar stations
glasgowtimes.co.ukScotRail is pushing forward with its Ticket to Net Zero programme, aiming to cut carbon emissions through fleet replacement, electrification, and energy efficiency upgrades. The operator plans to introduce Class 222 trains from 2027 and replace about two-thirds of its fleet over the next 15 years, with support for electrification projects in East Kilbride, Fife, and the Borders. It also targets Falkirk High as its first net zero station, adding solar car ports and using digital twins to monitor energy use at stations and depots. The plan aligns with Scotland's Railway Climate Action Plan for 2024-2029, developed with Network Rail. ScotRail says it has achieved year-on-year emissions reductions and expects further gains as more of the network is electrified. Other actions include a smart waste bin trial at Glasgow Queen Street and planting around 4,000 native trees through the I Dig Trees scheme. The announcement comes during Scotland's Climate Week, from September 28 to October 4.
