Scotland is developing its first industry standard for the protection and restoration of peatlands. These landscapes cover nearly a quarter of the country and act as critical carbon sinks, but many are currently degraded and emitting greenhouse gases. The new Peatland Standard will provide technical guidance and legal clarity for land managers, regulators, and funders. The goal is to ensure consistency and quality across restoration projects to improve water quality and climate resilience.

Standardizing technical guidance is a good first step, but the real test is the incentive structure. If the funding doesn't cover the long term monitoring costs, these standards are just paperwork.

Exactly. The article mentions 90k hectares are on the road to recovery, but it doesn't say how they are verifying the actual carbon sequestration rates. We need hard data, not just a list of good practices.

Interesting that the consultation runs until August 2026. That is a very long window for a draft standard. Usually, that suggests they are expecting significant pushback from land managers or are unsure about the baseline.

Could be a way to align with broader UK or EU reporting frameworks. Still, a two year lead time for a final publication in December 2026 feels slow given the climate targets.
