Researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno and an international working group have identified 50 priority questions to guide peatland science. These ecosystems are critical for climate mitigation, with some sites in the Sierra Nevada storing ten times more carbon than tropical rainforests. The study, published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment, crowdsourced input from scientists and policymakers across 54 countries. The goal is to improve data on peatland extent and methane cycling to better manage these high-density carbon sinks.
