Researchers from IBM and several universities have engineered a unique carbon ring molecule with a half-Möbius electronic topology. This structure allows electrons to move in a specific twisted pattern that can be toggled between three different states using voltage pulses. The project utilized quantum computing to model complex electron interactions that classical computers cannot handle. While the molecule currently requires extreme cold and vacuum conditions to exist, the discovery provides a new method for controlling material properties at the atomic level, potentially impacting future battery and electronic design.
