New research from Schneider Electric, presented at Climate Week NYC 2026, shows that AI-enabled building management systems can reduce whole-building energy use by up to 22% compared to traditional controls. The study, based on modeling validated against real-world pilots in Australia, India, and the U.S., found annual utility savings of $13,600 to $49,300 per building, with carbon avoidance more than 100 times the AI system's own footprint. The AI layer optimizes HVAC in real time by pulling in occupancy, weather, and equipment data. Small and mid-sized buildings under 100,000 square feet stand to gain the most, since they often lack dedicated facility teams. The findings suggest that AI can make sophisticated energy management accessible to a wider range of building owners, easing pressure on the grid while cutting costs and emissions.
