Schneider Electric and Bilfinger cut offshore emissions with renewable powered autonomous buoy in the North Sea

The buoy uses a microgrid with wind, solar, and battery storage to run subsea wells without a permanent crew. The system completed 1,000 hours of autonomous operation since late 2025. It is designed for marginal fields where full platforms and umbilical connections are too expensive or carbon intensive. The buoy runs on Schneider's EcoStruxure Automation Expert platform and uses 5G and Starlink for remote monitoring. Fire, gas, and smoke detection are built in. The companies say the approach could lower both emissions and installation costs for smaller offshore fields. Bilfinger received Schneider's Partner of the Year award for the project. The next step is scaling the model to other assets.
