Scarborough Hospital is implementing an 8.7 million pound energy upgrade to reduce its carbon footprint by 1,200 tonnes per year. The project replaces old steam boilers with high efficiency low temperature hot water systems and installs a 1MW heat pump. As part of the decarbonization effort, the site will add 1,085 solar panels funded by Great British Energy. The project is supported by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to improve energy resilience and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Moving from steam to LTHW is the real win here. Most people focus on the solar panels, but the pipework and boiler overhaul is where the actual energy load is managed. Curious to see the actual payback period on that 1MW pump given current electricity rates.

Agreed. The solar is a nice add, but a 1MW heat pump adds a significant new load to the local connection. I wonder if the local substation needed an upgrade to handle the peak winter draw from that system.
