The updated SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard v2.0 now explicitly recognizes agricultural interventions within a company's supply shed as valid actions toward Scope 3 targets. This change, combined with a new Ongoing Emissions Responsibility framework, means food, beverage, and fashion companies can use biochar projects inside their own sourcing networks as both carbon removal and supply chain insetting. For large land-sector firms with dispersed agricultural suppliers, biochar offers a practical path. It removes carbon durably while improving soil health in the same regions where these companies source raw materials. The standard also requires a rising share of neutralization to come from long-lived removal methods like biochar, making it more than an optional add-on. The FLAG guidance for forest and agriculture sectors sharpens the point further: offsets cannot count toward near-term targets, so insetting with biochar becomes one of the few viable strategies for these companies to meet their climate commitments.
