The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released version 2.0 of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard, moving away from a rigid one-size-fits-all approach. The updated framework gives companies more flexibility in setting climate targets while keeping direct emissions reductions as the main path to net-zero. It also introduces a best efforts clause for when external factors slow progress, as long as companies stay transparent about barriers. The new standard includes a mechanism that recognizes companies taking voluntary action on ongoing emissions, with larger firms expected to take on more responsibility over time. SBTi says the update builds on work with over 11,000 companies and was shaped by public consultations and expert reviews. The goal is to help more businesses turn climate pledges into measurable action toward net-zero by 2050.
