SBTi adopts book and claim for transport emissions: DHL responds
aircargonews.netThe Science Based Targets initiative has updated its Corporate Net Zero Standard to accept book and claim as a credible mechanism for reducing transport emissions. DHL supports the move, saying it allows the company to transfer the environmental benefits of low-carbon fuels used in its network to customers whose shipments move through that network. Book and claim lets companies trade emissions reductions via a registry, solving cases where one party reduces emissions for another or where the reduction is not tied to a specific shipment. For example, a shipper may request sustainable aviation fuel for a route, but the airline uses the equivalent fuel on a different flight. The buyer still gets credit for the overall reduction. DHL says the framework helps accelerate the transition to lower-emission logistics. The update could make it easier for logistics firms and their customers to claim credit for using sustainable fuels, even when the fuel is not physically linked to their cargo.
