Saudi Arabia Railways reported that moving freight and passengers from roads to rail avoided 364,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2025 and saved 139.4 million litres of fuel. The operator moved more than 30 million tonnes of freight and 14.6 million passengers, which it says eliminated about two million truck trips on Saudi roads. The rail network spans more than 5,500 km and connects ports, industrial zones and cities. Freight and mineral transport drove most of the savings. SAR also runs the Haramain High-Speed Railway and the Al-Mashaaer Al-Mugaddassah Metro on electricity, and more than half of its signalling and communications systems now run on solar power. The company recycled 10,216 tonnes of steel and aluminium from infrastructure work and planted over 53,000 trees. These figures show how rail expansion can cut transport emissions and support national climate goals. The emissions methodology is not detailed in the article, but the scale of fuel savings and truck trips avoided makes the direction clear.
