Saudi Arabia gives ACWA Power exclusive rights to export green hydrogen and renewable electricity

Saudi Arabia has granted ACWA Power exclusive rights to export green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia and methanol, as part of a broader push to dominate the clean energy export market. The utility company will also build renewable power generation and transmission infrastructure, including grid interconnections to Europe and neighboring Arab countries. The move supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 target of sourcing 50% of domestic electricity from renewables, freeing up crude oil for export. The NEOM Green Hydrogen Project, expected to produce 600 tons of green hydrogen per day by 2027, will be a key asset. Europe is the primary target market as the EU seeks low-carbon energy imports. The strategy offers a dual economic benefit: replacing domestic oil use with renewables while creating new revenue streams from green hydrogen exports. However, significant investments in port infrastructure, electrolysis, and desalination are still needed to make the plan work at scale.
